Never heard of Mechelen? That’s quite normal. It is a small city with no world famous festivals, no university and no big art scene. But the fact that if Mechelen is a small town, is also its attraction. It’s not eaten up by tourists like Bruges, but has some of the same beautiful houses next to the water, an impressive medieval cathedral, and a charming old beguinage.
People from Mechelen like to complain that there is not much nightlife, and instead of saying "this bar is really nice" they say "how long before this one closes down?" In fact, there really is some stuff happening under the surface, but you have to know when and where.
The town of Mechelen is situated half-way between Brussels and Antwerp. It has about 75.000 inhabitants.
