‘MV Solomon Trader’ oil spill. Feb 5, 2019 – East Rennell Island, Solomon Islands πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡§ Chartered by the Indonesian mining company BINTAN, the ship was carrying a cargo of bauxite (a stone used in aluminum production) when it ran aground in Lughu Bay, a protected UNESCO world heritage site – known for the largest raised coral atoll on the planet. The ship has leaked over 100 tons of fuel oil – seriously affecting the enviroment, and the 2,000 inhabitants there. 600,000 tons of oil remain on board.
