Bansko is a town in southwestern Bulgaria, located at the foot of the Pirin Mountains at an elevation of 925 m above sea level. It is a popular ski resort for both European and Bulgarian tourists. The mountain peaks near the town, the numerous lakes and the old pine woods make it a popular site for recreation.

The archeological traces of the inhabitants of Bansko date to the early periods of the Roman Empire. There are several housing structures at the outskirts of the town, which date to 100 BC. Bansko became part of Bulgaria around 811 AD and has been part of Bulgaria ever since.

We spent 2 nights in Bansko, at the Kempinski Hotel Grand Arena. It was a luxurious treat for a very reasonable price, and we enjoyed every second of it (Prices in Bulgaria are just amazingly low for us). And on top of that, we found out we got to this small magical town in time for their 100 years celebrations of their independence. The residents gathered in the town square, had ceremonies, national dancing, singing, speeches, shows and fireworks, and also free food. Boy, we were so happy to be there and enjoy part of their history with them.

We also walked some streets there, enjoyed the old roads and architecture and took lots of photos. Today’s post is one of them, taken in the late afternoon, when the light turned deep and warm and glorious. Wonderful time, great photographic subjects.

3 bracketed photos combined and toned mapped in Photomatix… the usual work. Thank you so much for coming along with us on this journey, your comments and observations. Very much appreciated! *s*.
